Once my Cateye had a similar symptom. The mode change button was stuck down. What looks like the button is really a rubber cover over the real button and the real button was stuck down. It would not pop back up no matter how I pushed it with my finger. I got the back of a ball point pen and pushed down on the button cover then wiggled it around and the real button came loose. I have not had a problem since.
