Durability absolutely not an issue. Cost-effectiveness, depends on a number of factors obviously. But using a tensioner or eccentric hub would open up a whole range of used/sale frames rather than the small number of SS-specific cross frames.

I've ridden a San Jose, I think it's a great bike. Stock gearing a bit high, but that's easily changeable. Last season I raced a Steamroller, it will be my pit bike this year. Clearance is an issue for bigger tires, tho.
