Black is black anodizing; silver is either chromed steel (cheap forks) or anodized aluminum; gold, both dark and light, is usually ti-nitride coating (as on Manitous and RSTs...and higher-price twist-drill sets) which is a hard-anodizing that is reputed to help with seal wear and stiction because of its slippery nature.
