This thread closely matches a conversation I had this weekend. Last summer I worked really hard on diet and exercise to drop 20 pounds (to 195 pounds). I increased my avg. distance from 10-15 to 20-25 miles. This year I discovered the joys of longer rides and my usual ride this year are 30-50. I changed my eating habits to replenish energy levels rather than drop weight. I'm still losing weight, but only about a pound a month and expect to hit 185 by the end of the year.

My Saturday ride was 35 miles so I burned 1400 calories. But the sports drink and energy bar counted for around 500 calories, and the celebratory ice cream was another 400-500, so my net burn was 400 calories.
Still, I'm burning more than I'm taking in so I'm happy!
