+1, that's what I would do/did.
Albeit a hitch would detract from the overall look of the bug...imho
roof: hard to reach, easy to damage roof, easy to forget about bike, and its surprisingly noisy at speed
trunk: looks floppy, hard not to damage car or bike...but cheap
hitch: secure, not cheap, doesn't look so good on some cars
Best thing (if you rarely need to transport more than one bike) would be to do none of the above and let someone else drive when you need to transport multiple bikes.
