Bottom bracket replacement - what kind for a Schwinn S30?

I have a Schwinn S30 (bought 1999) and it needs a new bottom bracket. It feels a bit rough as its turned and has much more resistance than it should. Unfortunately I'm not sure which bottom bracket it needs and I also need to buy the tools for the job. How can I find out which one it needs before buying the tools? I've tried the Schwinn website but unless i'm looking in the wrong place I don't see any info about components. I can see the bolts although I haven't removed them. I'm assuming its square tapered but you know where assumptions lead.

The bolts can be taken out with a regular socket wrench, correct?

Thanks, I've read up on the topic but I need to get some grease on my hands to really understand it.
