I did the ride single speed (48x17) --- made it to 112 st. (after coming off the Tri-Borough bridge) before throwing in the towel and jetting back to the top of central park. Nice to see a lot of fixies / single speeders out there.

Next investment: cycling shoes. Platform pedals and Vans are okay for commuting seven miles. Not so much for trying to do 100.

PS: My fave part was waiting for the light after the Brooklyn Bridge, then being the first to the top of the hill there and then realizing, oh crap, there's no one in front of me. And some awesome guy joking with me, "Which way, boss?" Hah.
