I, too, have mused on the overhead cabin folder, but I think TSA makes it more trouble than it's worth. Moreover, if you're taking a folder, you're almost always going to have checked bags anyway. If it's a regular trip, esp. a commute, keep a second bike at your destination. Street design and traffic near airports are generally very hostile to bicyclists.
I made a decision a while back that if I do travel again on the major airlines or even some trains like Amtrack, I would either leave the bike at home (the safest place), take the older folder with me in a hardened suitcase, or rent/hire a bike at my destination. The reality is...it is a different world now.
