Sorry late to the thread, but I would upgrade to a drop bar. You'll still have tire clearance if you want to run wider tires, but coming from a roadie background, you'll really miss the drop bar. The frames are plenty stong for a little off road. I'm not sure the price difference, but I would easily pay $500+ more. We started with a Fuji flat bar, and quickly upgraded to a Trek T2000, comfort was a primary reason.

That said, the Periscope is an awesome tandem. We even saw a triple a month or so ago. I have our Fuji set up with a kids stoker kit, and it works great, but my wife and I love the Trek.
