Well, I've wondered too. Some people can look at a bike, describe the wheel base and discuss the various angles and top tube lengths and tell you it would have made a great touring bike except for the gosh darn short chain stays. Me; I read the label. No label, I look at the handle bars.
You know that the
name of the bicycle can tell you most of the things you've mentioned above about the bicycle.
Also the differences between a road bicycle, a mountain bicycle, a tandem, a trike, a recumbent, a recumbent tandem, and a unicycle are pretty obvious.
