Like you said, Malibu Canyon is hard to avoid sometimes. But I always avoid Kanan (except to cross it on Mulholland or the little stretch from Mulholland to Latigo), not that it is particularly bad, it just lacks the character of the other canyons, it seems to be more of a freeway through the mountains.
