Been lurking for a while thought I would chime in here.
I like to road and mountain biking and I also commute some. I'm lucky to live in Sonoma County lots of great riding.
I've been mountain biking since the middle eighties, unless you count exploreing the East Bay Regional parks on a 5 speed stingray in the early 70's. still have my first Rock Hopper. It's quite beat but works well for getting groceries and the occiacional burning man trip.
I have only been road riding (at least with a road bike) for the last 7 years or so.

currently have a Marin Mt Vision and a specilized Allez, And a garage full of kid bikes and often thier friends bikes too.
Take it easy, and try to keep the shiny side up.
