Do it while you can and don't have a family or other responsibilities. Getting a motor is a really bad idea, I think you're overestimating how important it is to be in shape. Bicycle touring will whip you into shape and in the beginning you can just do like 30miles a day and you should take it easy to start since the Oregon coast is pretty tough anyways.
