+1 on weatherunderground. If somebody in your area has the sensors for it, you can get access to the actual sensor data and see what the danged wind speed is.

For what it's worth, you may have beaten the front by a few hours. I live near DC and I was fighting nasty 30mph headwinds uphill, with gusts better than that. Wasn't fun, but I made it.
