Mt. Diablo 1/1/08 Report

Sassy and I left on our Tandem at 8 a.m. in Walnut Creek. It was cold, about 37 degrees when we started. So faces and fingers were pretty frosty by the time we got to the meeting spot in Danville-about 30 minutes away. Luckily there is a Pete's Coffee right there and we had time, so we warmed up and stretched a little. At 9 a.m. we met up with the Valley Spokesman and others.
As we started up the South Side of the Mountain it was a little foggy but got into the sun quickly.
Let me just say what a special day it was. There had to have been at least 200 riders climbing the mountain with us. It is quite a special feeling.
Those of you who know the mountain can attest to the climb. You definitely earn it especially at the top where there is a final 500 meter/18% grade climb, affectionately called the "Wall" or the "%*$@!^". This morning there was a 30+ person cheering group made up of cyclists, hikers, joggers, drivers and motorcyclists. Strangely enough the weather at the top was downright balmy at around 60 degrees. About a 20 degree difference with the temps at the bottom when starting.
We saw 4 other tandems and told a couple about this forum.
It was a great way to bring in the new year- 47 miles 4,000 ft.

Happy New Year to Everyone out there - Health and Happiness!!
