Okay, first step, ensure it really is a 1-1/8" and not 1" head tube. Measure the diameter of the opening of the head tube (either top or bottom), it should be 34mm (not 30.2mm).

Steel fork would be fine, but you can find inexpensive carbon fiber forks, too. You could put a want ad in your local Craigslist and see if someone has a 1-1/8" steel fork laying around (after upgrading to CF); just make sure the steerer will be long enough (his/her frame should be as big or bigger than yours, but measure to be sure). As for rake, it's best to stick to 45mm as the frame was designed for it, but going to like 43mm won't be noticeable (if you notice anything, it will be greater stability in keeping a straight line).
