Unless you are incredibly light and your tires never leavet the ground, forget about radial lacing. Looks good, not very strong. Forget it for the rear wheel.

Three cross is the most reliable, and durable lacing. Four cross puts the spokes at too much of an angel and covers over the adjacent spoke hole causing unusual wear and problems with replacing spokes.

I'd ONLY go 3x, especially for a mtn bike!

The bigger question is straight gauge or double butted spokes.
Then there's the debate of brass nipples vs. aluminum.
