Sounds normal to me.
AFAIK with SRAM Rival/Force, a partial shift from small ring gets you the small trimmed position (for the last couple small cogs). A full shift from the small ring gets you the big ring (which has no trim for all cogs). Any shift off the big ring moves the cage full left back to the untrimmed position on the small ring.
