Maybe look at a semi-slick. I run a narrow semi-slick in all conditions on the rear of my singlespeed. It rolls fast, and if you know what you are doing its manageable in almost all conditions on the trail.
That's been my experience, too. I wasn't sure how it would work (putting semi's on one of my bikes that I planned on riding mostly on-road and light trails) but I've found them to be good performers in some pretty rough stuff.
