I think the best midpriced hardcase is the
Serfas Bike Armor. It packs very securely and I like the strap fittings, they seem to suspend the frame and parts away from the shell pretty well.
Another idea that I think helps is buying a couple of axles and some locknuts and making yourself metal, fitted frame spacers. A pretty clever kludge that seems a bit nicer than the plastic shipping spacers.
