Marzocchi has you covered. Every year it seems, they make a model that has the 1" steerer tube option--no conversions, no kits. For 2005 the the MX Comp models can be ordered in 1". So you can get a modern suspension fork, if you'd like. And I think you can also convert their other forks with a kit if you choose.
There's a lot of folks out there with Bontragers and other 1" bikes in the same pickle. I guess Marzocchi recognized the need, although word hasn't seemed to spread very well.
