I've heard that messangers don't get paid very well at all, usually below minimum wage as it's a commission type thing. Factor in the costs of bicycle upkeep and long hard working hours to make anything and it's probably not worth it financially.
My advice (based upon just what I've read about messangers): Do it for the love of it, not for the money.
