I drive a ’93 Subaru with 220,000 miles on it. It was paid for many years ago. My commute is 13 miles one way and takes me 15 minutes from the time I grab my keys until I am at my desk. I have free parking at work. Based on the number of kids, my school, work, and activities it would be impractical to give up the car. So I don’t have any concrete numbers or justifications working in my favor.

That said, the going rate of mileage for business expenses in the US is $0.35/mile. Based on my old beater I reduced that to $0.30/mile, which averages $8.00 per commute. I keep a log and justify spending more money on my bike habit based on these numbers. 110 more commutes and the new bike is paid for!!!! I’m starting to eye my next bike!!!!

Savings = $0
