Help with Cannondale Killer V500 bike upgrades

Hello,

I'm new to the forum and I'm also new to the bicycling world. I used to do it for pleasure but now I have decided to do it for fitness and to save money on gas.

I would like some help with some upgrades on a used Cannondale bike that I just bought today. It's a 1996/97 Killer V 500. I paid $250 for it and so I thought it would be pretty reasonable for me to upgrade rather than purchasing brand new.

I would like to add some upgrades to it like front and rear suspension and possibly disc brakes if at all possible, but I don't know where to begin or what to begin with ie; brand, size, etc. I would like to do this myself if possible, or would your recommend that I just take it to a bicycle shop??

Can anyone offer any advice??
