Also consider the Raleigh Rush Hour for around $500 (sometimes less). It has tighter geometry than some of the aforementioned bike. For commuting purpose, a bike with tighter geometry will allow easier maneuverability through traffic and around obstacles. The Raleigh Rush Hour comes with both freewheel and fixed cogs; this gives you options.
