Cleaning the rotating mechanics

Today at work I asked a co-worker if he had a good idea how to remove the old grease and dirt of the chain and gears. He told me to get a spraycan of WD40, which is the best according to him.

Maybe some of you can tell me more. Isn't WD40 too aggressive for this job? Is there anything else I should use instead?
