I'm still pretty much a novice, so cannot help you with the technical questions, but I know that in my area, 95% of the kids are riding on Roadmaster or NEXT brand bikes from Wal-Mart. It's really rare to see a LBS-type brand bike parked in the rack at the school or outside the library, at the playground, etc.
