Yes, I was experiencing some knee pain recently, so I moved my seatpost down a tiny bit (I was too high and over extending on one leg, I must have uneven legs). I also tweaked my cleat position on my shoes slightly (they had got uneven) which might've helped.

Chances are your pain is either from mashing too big a gear in a bad fit. Fix your fit, gear down if you have to, and install a brake anyway.
