Why did you say you wouldn't have paid $400.? It was the out-the-door price. I did not see any cheaper bikes anywhere except online where I could not test ride it. Seeing it in person before buying was important to me. This Avenir bike, although manufactured by Dahon uses all standard replacement parts, like wheels, tubes etc. Didn't want one that would be proprietary and have to pay specialty prices. Wish I could have seen a Downtube for $250. as I see quoted in other posts. Probably would have bought them for sure!! I really like the looks of them. Here is the stock photo of ours:
