Route 1 is a designated bike route, but I certainly wouldn't ride it. Check out Virginia DOT. Maybe they have some bike maps. Certainly once you get out of the DC metro area, the options are greater. You might also want to look at the Richmond Area Bicycling Association (
www.raba.org). They might have some suggestions.
Why not ride through DC? It's a great place to ride.
