i have a peugeot uo-8 with the stock thin cups as well. if the deore spindle is a normal square taper, then i dont see any problems using it. im using a set of sugino cranks with the spindle and found 110mm to be a good size. i bought a 115, but it gave me a terrible chainline. so i would think if you use a single chainring, a 117mm would give you a pretty bad chainline.
what kind of cranks are you going to use?
I hadn't even thought about the cranks yet... I was thinking maybe using a single ring of an old shimano 105 set I have lying around. Are you using a track wheelset?
