heh. It really is a function of the bike. On my ride today (52 miles, 3:37 in the saddle, which doesn't count the 40 minute break at turnaround, nor the five minutes or so I spent gasping for breath after a hill) I was really dragging on the way home, and was really wishing I had a gear I could pedal at 11 or 12 mph. I've got one that's 13 mph at 90 rpm, the next one down is 10. I've got a really hard time pedaling at less than 85 or 90 rpm, unless I'm mashing a gear. I end up pedaling and then coasting.
(I'm riding an early 80's bike with weird sun tour alpine gearing. It's got a 36/52 in front, and 14,16,18,20,22,26,36 in back. I'm not quite sure what the point is, really. I'd much rather have a triple and a narrower range of gears in back.)
