I'll repeat (for emphasis) what pedldlin brat just wrote: Don't use gasoline. It is unsafe as a solvent for cleaning for all the reason's cited. Use the numerous, safer alternatives. I've used kerosene for decades, FWIW.
One can get a "deoderized" kerosene that is a bit less odorous.
