I don't see anything wrong with the bottle mount position. I've got a bike that has to have spacers under the cage to allow it to clear the front derailleur clamp, which goes between the mounting bosses. Yours looks like it would be in a similar position if you had a front derailleur. Have you tried mounting a cage?
