My front shifter on a 2004 Ultegra equipped road bike would not shift yesterday...i.e. I wanted to shift to a bigger chainring, and the shifter was so stiff I had to grab it with my right hand to attempt...it just sort of ratcheted through it's range, and did not go back to it's "rest" position.
Clearly, a cable is not connected somewhere in the bowels of the shifter. I started to disassemble, but soon got to the point, after taking off some screws, washers, and nuts, that I was not finding where the cable would actually be attached. HELP!!! Is this fixable at home?
Do I need a mechanic more gifted than myself? ;-)

Don't be intimidated by your bike. It is a pretty simple device, all things considered. Go to ParkTool and scroll down the page to find a shifter that looks like yours. You will see that the cable isn't down in "the bowels" of your shifter. It is simply threaded through a hole.

It is usually best to have documentation before tearing things apart unless you are just extremely mechanically inclined.
