I'd go about 2 turns of the knob for a high pressure slick road tire. Recommendations will vary by brand though.
Buy the cheapest, smoothest tires you can get for using on the trainer. I just got some Hutchinson Flash tires from
Nashbar for $5 each. Even WalMart's tires are $8!
