How do I decrease drag from hub motor

I have my amped-bikes motor kit on. However, the motor creates a drag that causes me to need "help" getting up hills I previously didn't need help on. Is this just the nature of using a hub motor or is there something I can do about it? I plan to ask A-B, also. During the ride, my controller got way too hot, even sitting on top of my battery case. Maybe it is because it is 100 degrees out? In hot weather, I need a "cooler" system. I plan to buy a plastic box, drill holes, and use a cooling mat in the box. Had a wonderful ride today on the highway and then up a rough dirt road with steep inclines. I found I had to put my gears in the easiest of my 21 gears to get up the hill and keep some of my body weight forward to help traction. Glad I kept all the gears, so far. I went 15 miles (including some serious hills) and my battery still had plenty of juice left.
