Huntsville, AL: Another Tragedy

Sarah was the girlfriend of some long-time friend's son. She was a strong cycling advocate and year-round cycling commuter... This is just gut-wrenching and the 'story' of the motorist sounds all too familiar.

An Athens High School graduate was killed Monday while riding a bicycle on Technology Drive in Huntsville’s Research Park.

Sarah Katherine Chapman, 20, was attending the University of Alabama in Huntsville after graduating from Athens High in 2006.

Sgt. Mark Roberts with the Huntsville Police Department said she was struck by an SUV at about 10:30 a.m. while riding her bike. She was taken to Huntsville Hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Limestone Chapel Funeral Home will handle funeral arrangements.

Chapman was active in many clubs and activities at Athens High, such as the Sub Deb service organization, a family friend said.

AHS Principal Chris Bolen said he had been notified of Chapman’s death.

“It’s just a terrible tragedy,” he said Monday afternoon. “We’ve lost a fine person and a wonderful student. She had a great personality and was just a great kid to have in our school.”

According to Roberts, Chapman’s bike reportedly swerved and the driver of the SUV was unable to avoid hitting her. No charges are expected to be filed against the driver, Roberts said.
