$800 isn't really that much for a bike.

This bike is probably OK for riding to the bar, but I wouldn't ride it to the grocery store. If I were in your position, I'd just buy a better bike and drop another $25 or so on a set of interrupter levers. That way you aren't spending $250 on a not so nice bike just because it comes with a set of $25 levers.
