In that case you're not using them properly.

I ride with wide-leg jeans all the time, with no problems. What you need to do is fold each pant cuff towards the outside of the leg (away from the bike on each side). One neat fold is all that's needed. Then use the reflective ankle-band about an inch to two inches above the bottom of the cuff.

What the fold does is effectively to narrow the whole pant leg down from the knee. It should not get into the drivetrain at that point.

I like to start the fold at the front of my shin, but you may be comfortable with some other solution.
