I would be careful about any metal object you don't want to lose. I recently had an airport security worker in France confiscate a simple climbing carabiner from my backback. She said she suspected I could use it as a weapon to bludgeon people. It weighed only a few grams. I imagine she would have freaked out if I had been carrying my bicycle U-lock. It does seem wiser to ship the U-lock with the bike.
