i've had my share of similar problems. I have an sram compact crank. I think the shimano stuff is specifically designed for normal 53/39 cranks. You can clearly see the indentations where the chain should be while on the small ring. Then if you compare that to the sram FD which is smooth. having said that I still have my bike set up to not really trim at any point. and my 10 speed shifters have a trim shift so it doesn't really matter.
