Any ratio around the 2.75 mark is fine (divide the front by the rear to get this number). 44/16, 42/15, 39/14, 36/13, 33/12, 30/11, 28/10, 25/9, 22/8 are all more or less equivalent. The larger options are usually cheaper and may last longer when just riding around, the smaller options generally weigh less and give you more clearance over obstacles.

Increasing the ratio will make it harder to accelerate and climb hills but increase your top speed; reducing the ratio will do the opposite. 2.75 has been the sweet spot for many years now, and if you ride enough you'll get used to anything anyway, so I'd suggest just pick a gearing that's around 2.75 that suits your preferences for weight/clearance/price, and not worry about the ratio for now. If you're still not feeling the love this time next year, by then you'll at least have a better idea of what you want, and then you can start tweaking.
