I'd get the best bike or bent you can afford and then purchase a heart monitor so that when you ride you can make sure your heart rate is up enough to build cardiovascular strength. I remember a post a couple months ago where someone mentioned that when riding a bent it was easy to get to the point where you were moving fast but not really exerting yourself in a manner that will help with your weight lose goal.
