Chap leather makes an excellent covering: tough but supple. Only needs an ocassional rub-down of neatsfoot oil to keep it tip-top. You can usually get it at your local custom (horse) saddle-maker.

I recovered the one on my old IT175 Yamaha that way and liked it.
