valve core?

Okay well i learned one problem which could be making my SID leak air on the negative side is the valve core. I was told a trick that if i was to fill a bucket with water and place one let just a few centemeters in and saw bubbles that means its the valve core thast crapped out. Is this a proper technique? I just like to have some second opinions before i attempt something like suspension which i know little about. If it is the valve core, are these things hard to come by, expensive and are they difficult to install? I was going to have a shop do it but if its hard to install it means i need to have my cash out to pay labor Any information is helpful
