The first wave off the boat isn't bad if you do what keithm0, his wife and I did last year. Wait it out on the sidelines for a few minutes and let the crowd thin out.
And
please don't let my reports sully your desire to do the STP. If ever there was a double to do, that one is the one. Yes, it's crowded and crazy etc. Sure, I said I wouldn't do it again... but I may have lied.
Maybe not this year (but who knows?) but certainly in the future I'll ride it again. I have great plans of riding it on A) my singlespeed, and B) my utility cruiser, with a loaded trailer full of camping luxuries and a boombox strapped to the front rack.
