You don't just want to dump lube on a chain, you need to clean it first. Get a kit and cleaner to do this, then once it's done lube it LIGHTLY. Not sure what else you might be looking to lube, but whatever problem you're trying to address, chances are it also needs a cleaning more than anything else. Dumping lube on top of dirt doesn't help matters.
