idunno about that.. my gf prefers fixed to freewheel in traffic, as the ability to intuitively increase and decrease your speed regardless of pedal position adds a certain stability to negotiating at lower speeds.
she acquired an impressive level of confidence in traffic after switching to fixed a few years ago. she went from riding like traffic was happening to her to riding like she was happening to it. the result is a much safer, more effective way of getting around a city not especially known for embracing bicycle culture.
she also got much faster in a much shorter amount of time, as she was forced to pedal through exhaustion rather than coasting, which she was thrilled about.
