On the flat it was easier to maintain the same speed on my full sized geared roadie than on the SS, on hills the SS was slower.....maybe had I persisted with it, my technique would have improved?

I did realise that SS takes more effort, not physically so much, but, in the way you think cycling should accomplished. In other words, we are so used to using so many gears that when given the option of one gear our minds struggle with the concept. Even using an old SA 3spd hub seems wrong, but when you grow accustomed to it, it's quite adequate.

Singlespeeds make you smile because they are purely and simply the true essence of cycling, therefore they make you happy.
